Charles Belle is a painter who explores the territories of the intimate, of the existential, with sensuality, intensity and depth. Forests, wild grasses, flowers, waterways and portraits express something other than what lies before the eyes. Charles Belle approaches the theme of nature without seeking any realist representation. What drives him is more akin to a certain abstraction. For the artist, ‘the subject of a painting is not the subject!’ When he paints flowers, ‘they are not flowers’. What interests him are all the signals that a painting might transmit, in an indefinable and indirect manner.
